HOW TO HAVE A SPIRITUAL CONVERSATION WITH YOUR CHILD(REN)
If you want your kids to develop a love for God, Jesus and the Bible, we need to teach them that we serve a Holy God. Not just Holy, but “Holy, holy, Holy” as is described in Isaiah 6:3. How we live is determined by who or what we love. So let’s teach our kids to Love God and Love people by being examples to them as we live our lives serving our Holy God.
Here are some foundational ways we can have spiritual conversations with our kids.
- Read the Bible yourself on a daily basis. If you want God’s word to matter in your kids’ lives then it should matter in yours.
- Read the Bible with your kids. Even if you only read a couple of verses a day. Then discuss what you have read by asking these three questions:
- What is this verse about?
- What does this teach about God and you?
- How does this verse point to Jesus?
- Ask questions not only about what you are reading together in the Bible, but also questions about life. Ask them what they are watching on TV or reading apart from their Bible reading? This will help teach them how to not just believe everything they hear and read, but will help them compare it to what God’s word says. Here are three good questions to ask:
- What does what you are reading or watching say is true about people?
- What is it saying that is true or important to life?
- How is what it is saying similar or different to what God’s word says?
Help your kids discover a love for the truth and a love for God’s word. Don’t just teach them the rules of what is right or wrong. Help them to think on God’s word and what it means in their lives every day not just on Sunday
Read 1st John 4:19. Our kids love for God needs to be based on the truth of God loving us first and how great that love is.
